To the Director and Screenwriter of Harry Potter 7.1.
Hollywood, California, USA.

Dear Mssrs Yates and Kloves,

Thank you for your film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1.

I just thought I’d drop you a quick line to let you know of a newish invention called the montage.  A montage is a neat little cinematic trick that allows you to quickly show the development of the plot over time using short key scenes cut together and set to a hit song that suits the mood.  Some good examples include the training of newbie novices from clumsy cluelessness to fighting fit.  It’s also good for travel between far away places, or the development of feelings between an odd couple who used to hate each other.

I bring it up, mostly because I think your film could have greatly benefitted from a montage or two.  In fact, It would also have been handy for 85% of the plot of HP7.1 in which, let’s be honest, not much happens.  Not only would this have allowed for the two parts to be made as one complete film it would also have given that film – which if I’m not mistaken is supposed to be gearing up to the final showdown between good and evil – urgency, energy and a sense of what’s at stake.

Think about it for next time, maybe.

Yours sincerely,
Jen B.
